titleOfInvention Optically active compound and production thereof
abstract NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound expressed by formulas I and II (R 1 is 1-15C alkyl or alkoxy; X 1 to X 3 are H, halogen or CN; R 2 is 1-15C alkyl). n EXAMPLE: 4'-(1-Methylheptyloxy)-4-{4-(1-butanoyloxyethyl)phenoxymethyl}biphenyl [(S, R)]-isomer. n USE: Useful as a component of ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures, having excellent compatibility with existing smectic liquid crystals and capable of providing a liquid crystal mixture having a high Ps value. n PREPARATION: A racemic modification expressed by formula III and an ester of 2,2,2-trichloroethanol with a 2-16C fatty acid are reacted with an enzyme having esterase activity, preferably a microorganism belonging to the genus Pseudomonas or Achromobacterium or an enzyme produced from the animal pancreas in an organic solvent to selectively esterify only the (R)-isomer of the above-mentioned racemic modification. The unreacted (S)-isomer is then separated to readily provide the optically active substance expressed by formulas I and II. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio
