abstract PURPOSE: To extract and purify water-soluble hemicellulose from wheat bran in high purity by washing wheat bran with water to remove water-soluble substances, then treating with a dilute aqueous solution of alkali and successively purifying by using an ultrafilter and an ion exchange resin. n CONSTITUTION: Wheat bran is washed with water to remove water-soluble substances and treated with 0.1-0.4 N aqueous solution of alkali to elute a fraction consisting essentially of hemicellulose in the aqueous solution of alkali.
