abstract | PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain dinitrotoluene without generating the problem caused by the use of conc. sulfuric acid by reacting mononitrotoluene and nitric acid in a liquid phase in the presence of a specific inorg. acidic solid. n CONSTITUTION: In the presence of an inorg. acidic solid containing at least one kind of a component selected from the group consisting of orthophosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, metaphosphoric acid, first phosphate, second phosphate, orthophosphate and pyrophosphate of a metal capable of forming a cation having positive charge of 1-5, especially, 3-5, mononitrotoluene and nitric acid are reacted at 40-100°C in a mol ratio of nitric acid/mononitrotoluene of 0.1-10 to obtain dinitrotoluene.
