titleOfInvention Fluorine-substituted biphenyl derivative
abstract NEW MATERIAL:An optically inactive fluorine-substituted biphenyl derivative expressed by formula I (R 1 and R 2 are 1-18C straight-chainlike of branched chainlike alkyl; Z is single bond, O, COO or OCO; either of X 1 and X 2 is F and the other is H). n EXAMPLE: 3-fluoro-4-octyloxy-4'-nonyloxybiphenyl. n USE: A low-viscosity and chemically stable compound, useful as a composition component for preparing a practical ferroelectric liquid crystal composition, solely having an SmC phase itself within a wide temperature range at about ambient temperature or capable of preparing a mixture having the SmC phase within a wider temperature range by mixing thereof at a suitable ratio. n PREPARATION: For example, 2-fluorophenol as a starting material is passed through several steps as shown in the reaction formulas to afford a compound expressed by formula II in formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio
