abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound which is used as a starting substance for dyes and medicines in high purity and high yield suitably by using a specific alcohol as a solvent for acidic precipitation with oxalic acid from a solution containing an alkali metal salt of hydroxybenzoic acid. n CONSTITUTION: At least one selected from alcohols of 1 to 4 carbon atoms such as methanol, ethanol or 1-propanol, preferably methanol is used as a solvent to effect acidic precipitation of an alkali metal salt of hydroxybenzoic acid with oxalic acid at room temperature within 1 hour. The alcohol used in the present invention may contain a small amount of water and alcohol of 5 or more carbon atoms and hydrocarbons, but their concentrations are preferably less than 10wt.%. Inorganic acid may be mixed, as long as the concentration is less than 1wt.%.
