abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a pharmaceutical composition that contains a specific (thio) xanthine derivative and useful for therapy and prevention of cerebrovascular lesions and/or lesions accompanying aging of the brain. n CONSTITUTION: This pharmaceutical composition contains a compound of formula I [i) R 1 is X-CO-CH 3 (X is a hydrocarbon group replaceable with CH 3 ; R 2 and R 3 are each a 2-6C alkyl, cyclohexyl, alkoxyalkyl, etc.; Y and Z are each O; ii) R 2 is formula II (R 4 and R 5 are each a 1-4C alkyl, 1,3-dioxa-cyclohexa-2,2- diyl in combination of both groups, etc.); R 2 and R 3 are each a 1-4C alkyl, Y and Z are each O; iii) R 1 is CH 2 COCH 3 ; R 2 and R 3 are each a 2-6C alkyl; Z is S; Y is O or S; iv) R 1 is (CH 2 ) n COCH 2 ((n) is 1 or 2); either of R 2 and R 3 is a 1-6C alkyl and the other is a 2-6C alkyl; Z is O; Y is S; etc.], for example, 1,3-di-n-butyl-7-(3-oxobutyl)xanthine.
