abstract PURPOSE: To improve the wet strengthening effect and storage stability by hydrolyzing acetal group in a copolymer of (meth)acrylamide and acetal group- contained monoethylenic unsaturated monomer followed by condensation. n CONSTITUTION: A copolymer (A) having a K-value of 10-70 is provided by polymerizing (a) a (meth)acrylamide; 50-99 mole % with (b) an acetal group-contained monoethylenic unsaturated monomer of formula I or II (R is H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 ; X is O or NH; R 1 is a 1-6 C alkylene or arylene; R 2 is a 1-4 C alkyl or 2-4 C alkylene); 50-1 mole %, and (c) another monomer (e.g.; diallyldimethyl ammonium); 0-20 mole % in the presence of a polymerization initiator at 70-100°C so that the acetal group is not hydrolyzed. An acid is then added to the component A to regulate pH to 5 or less, and the mixture is heated to 20-100°C to hydrolyze the acetal group, whereby an aldehyde-contained copolymer (B) is obtained. The component B is regulated to pH 5-11 and condensed at 20-80°C to the highest limit where it is water-soluble, an acid is added until the pH is 3 or less, and the condensation is stopped. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO
