titleOfInvention | Production of p-toluenesulfonic acid |
abstract | PURPOSE: To economically obtain a compound useful as an organic acid catalyst, solubilizing agent for liquid synthetic detergents, etc., in high purity by adding water to a solution of a toluenesulfonic acid isomer mixture in toluene and separating the resultant deposited substance in the absence of water. n CONSTITUTION: Toluene is sulfonated with sulfuric acid to provide a solution of a toluenesulfonic acid isomer mixture in toluene. water is then added to the resultant solution to deposit p-toluenesulfonic acid-hydrate, which is then separated in the absence of water in an atmosphere, such as dry air, to afford the objective substance. In the sulfonation, toluene is present in a molar amount of ≥2 times based on the sulfuric acid in a volume of ≥1200ml based-on 1mol toluenesulfonic acid isomer mixture. The water is added in an amount of 0.4-0.7mol based on the toluenesulfonic acid isomer mixture. The objective substance is obtained without causing problems of sticking sulfuric acid, waste sulfuric acid, etc. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio |
