titleOfInvention Substituted 2-chloro-5-cyanothiazole and preparation thereof
abstract NEW MATERIAL: A substituted 2-chloro-5-cyanothiazole of formula I (wherein R is Cl or methyl). n EXAMPLE: 2,4-Dichloro-5-cyanothiazole n USE: The compound is useful as an intermediate for the preparation of a herbicide. The herbicide obtained shows an excellent herbicidal activity against a monocotyledonous (poaceous) weed and has an excellent selectivity towards various important crops. The herbicide can be applied either before or after the budding of a plant, preferably applied in the before-budding method. Also it can be mixed with the soil before seeding. n PREPARATION: 5-Cyano-2-thiazole of formula II is reacted with an acid chloride such as phosphorus pentachloride, thionyl chloride, etc., at 20-120°C, if necessary in the presence of an acid acceptor (e.g. pyridine, dimethylaniline, etc.) to obtain a compound of formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO
