NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I [R 1 is 3-14C alkyl; R 2 and R 3 are 1-3C alkyl; R 4 is 1-10C alkyl; Q 1 -Q 3 are ether bond, carboxylic acid ester bond or carbonyl bond; and Q 1 is further single bond or carbonyldioxy bond; M is group of formula II or III (X and Y are ether bond, carboxylic acid ester bond, ethylene bond, etc.; ring A - ring C are the same or different six-membered diyl)]. n EXAMPLE: 4'-[(1R,2S)-3-Methoxy-1,2-dimethylpropoxy]-4-biphenylcarboxylic acid 4-octyloxyphenyl ester. n USE: A ferrodielectric liquid crystal compound which exhibits high spontaneous polarization and has a low, wide temperature range exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase. n PREPARATION: A basic skeleton carboxylic acid of formula IV and an optically active dichiral secondary alcohol of formula V are subjected to a dehydrative condensation reaction in the presence of a protonic acid in an organic solvent to provide the compound of formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio |
