titleOfInvention Racemization of optically active tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylic acid
abstract PURPOSE: To perform racemization of an optically active tetrahydrofuran- carboxylic acid using an inexpensive reagent on an industrial scale at a low cost without causing undesirable side reaction such as decomposition by heating the carboxylic acid in the presence of a strong base at a high temperature. n CONSTITUTION: An optically active tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylic acid of formula (* represents asymmetric carbon atom) can be racemized by treating at ≥100°C (preferably at 140-160°C under pressure using water as a reaction medium) in the presence of a strong base (preferably sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide of an amount of 1.5-2.5 equivalent at a concentration of 30-60wt.% in the reaction medium). The heat-treatment may be performed by using an organic solvent (e.g., ethylene glycol) having a boiling point of >100°C as the medium and heating at a temperature below the boiling point of the solvent under normal pressure. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio
