abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound with herbicidal activity, thus useful as a herbicide by treatment, in the presence of a specific amino group donor, using specific microorganisms, of 4-(hydroxymethylphosphinyl)-2-oxo-butyric acid. n CONSTITUTION: 4-(hydroxymethylphosphinyl)-2-oxo-butyric acid is treated in the presence of an amino group donor, with cultured products of microorganisms having transamination ability, fungi therefrom or processed products therefrom to obtain the objective L-2-amino-4-(hydroxymethylphosphinyl)-butyric acid. Said amino group donor is at least a combination of fumaric acid and ammonium ion. The microorganisms to be used are those belonging to Escherichia, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Bacillus sp.
