titleOfInvention Racemization of optically active 2-(1-naphthylmethyl) succinic acid
abstract PURPOSE: To readily provide (RS)-2-(1-naphthylmethyl)succinic acid useful as an raw material for medicines by subjecting (S)-2-(1-naphthylmethyl)succinic acid to a conversion reaction into an ester, to a treatment with a base to racemize the prepared ester and further to a hydrolysis reaction. n CONSTITUTION: An optically active compound of formula I [the C atom having a subscript of (S) has a (S)-arrangement] is treated with an alcohol, preferably methanol, under an acidic condition to convert into an ester of formula IX (R 4 is alcohol residue), which is treated with a base such as an alkali alcoholate or an alkaline earth metal alcoholate to give a racemic compound of formula X [(RS) exhibits to be a racemic compound]. The compound of formula X is hydrolyzed and subsequently optically resolved to readily provide a racemic compound of formula II which can be derived into an optically active compound of formula III [the C atom having a subscript of (R) has a (R) arrangement] useful as a raw material for a hypertension remedy. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio
