titleOfInvention Liquid crystal
abstract NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by the formula R 1 -Ph-Py-R 2 (Ph is 1,4-phenylene; Py is 2,5-pyrimidyl; at least either of R 1 and R 2 is 2-18C straight- chain acyl and the other is alkoxy). n EXAMPLE: 2-(4'-Heptyloxyphenyl)-5-octylcarbonylpyrimidine. n USE: An S c liquid crystal, capable of exhibiting smectic C (S c ) phase, operable within a wide temperature range including ambient temperature due to the extremely high upper temperature limit (≥100°C) thereof, simultaneously chemically stable and usable as a memory type display element, such as thermal writing laser. n PREPARATION: A 2-(4'-alkoxyphenyl)pyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid is converted into an acid chloride according to a conventional method and the resultant acid chloride is then reacted with a Grignard reagent prepared from an alkyl halide to afford the compound expressed by the formula R 1 -Ph-Py-R 2 . n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio
