titleOfInvention Purification of 4,4'-dihydroxytetraphenylmethanes
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound in the form of acicular crystal having high purity, in high solvent efficiency by using an aliphatic cyclic ether as a recrystallization solvent, dissolving 4,4'-dihydroxytetraphenylmethanes in the solvent and purifying the compound by recrystallization. n CONSTITUTION: Crude crystal of 4,4'-dihydroxytetraphenylmethanes is preferably washed with a proper solvent (e.g., ethanol) beforehand, dissolved in an aliphatic cyclic ether preferably under heating and purified by cooling and recrystallizing at a cooling rate of 100-0.01°C/min to obtain the objective compound useful as a raw material for polymers such as polycarbonate and an intermediate for organic compounds. The aliphatic cyclic ether is preferably a 5-membered or 6-membered aliphatic cyclic ether such as tetrahydrofuran or 1,4-dioxan and its amount is usually 1-1,000g (2-500g for forming large acicular crystals) based on 1g of the 4,4'-dihydroxytetraphenylmethanes. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio
