titleOfInvention Ester derivative
abstract NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula (R 1 and R 2 are 1-13C alkyl; X and Y are -COO- or -OOC-). n EXAMPLE: A 4-(2',4'-di-n-alkyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoic acid 4"-cyanophenyl ester. n USE: A liquid crystal display element substance showing high dielectric anisotropy, having nematic liquid crystal properties and drivable at low voltage when used as a display element of torsional negmatic mode. n PREPARATION: A 2,4-dialkyloxybenzoyl chloride is reacted with p- hydroxybenzoic acid in an aromatic solvent such as benzene or toluene in the presence of a deoxidizer such as pyridine. Then the reaction product is condensed with p-cyanophenol in a chlorine-based solvent such as methylene chloride in the presence of a condensation agent such as N,N-dichlorohexylcarbodiimide to give a compound shown by the formula. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio
