abstract PURPOSE: To safely obtain the subject compound in good yield, by using a primary alcohol as a proton donor used together with an alkaline metal in reducing an epoxy-oxosteroids in a mixed liquid ammonia solvent. n CONSTITUTION: 1α,2α-Epoxy-Δ 4 , 6 -3-oxosteroids (e.g., 1α,2α-epoxycholesta-4,6- dien-3-one) having a partial structure expressed by formula I are reduced with an alkaline metal (preferably lithium) and a ≥2C primary alcohol (preferably 2W4C alcohol) in a mixed liquid ammonia solvent to afford the aimed compound having a partial structure expressed by formula II. Furthermore, the alkaline metal is used in an amount of 30W55 equiv. and the primary alcohol is used in an amount of 150W180 equiv. based on the compound expressed by formula I. The reaction is preferably carried out at -40W-33°C by adding the primary alcohol into a mixed solvent containing the compound expressed by formula I and the alkaline metal. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio
