abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain an α-mono-secondary alkylnaphthalene, by reacting naphthalene with an alkylating agent selected from an olefin, a primary and a secondary alcohol and a monohalogenated alkyl in the presence of iron chloride, etc. n CONSTITUTION: 100pts.wt. naphthalene is reacted with an alkylating agent selected from 10W500pts.wt. olefin R 1 -CH=CH-R 2 (R 1 is H or 1W17C alkyl; R 2 is 1W18C alkyl), 10W1,000pts.wt. 3W20C primary or secondary alcohol or 10W1,000pts.wt. 3W20C primary or secondary monohalogenated alkyl in the presence of 5W30pts.wt. iron chloride or tin chloride at 60W140°C for 1W10 horus to give a mono-secondary alkylnaphthalene having the molar ratio of α-form/β-form of ≥3.0.
