abstract PURPOSE: To eliminate the overlap of bacteria on each other and to shorten the time for measurement by causing a diluted specimen to be irradiated by excitation light to emit fluorescence and subjecting the fluorescent image of this time to prescribed processing. n CONSTITUTION: The specimen 8 in a fermentation tank 1 is supplied by a constant-feed pump 34 at a constant rate to a conduit 24. On the other hand, a diluting liquid is supplied at a constant rate by a constant-feed pump 30 from a diluting liquid tank 35 into the conduit 24. The respective liquids supplied to the conduit 24 are mixed by a stirrer 32 and the mixture is sent to a detecting unit A and is fixed between a cover glass 26 and a plunger 24. The mixture is the irradiated by the excitation light from a light source 2, a light filter 12 and a condenser 10. The fluorescence emitted by the specimen at this time is photographed by a camera 21 after noises are removed therefrom by an optical filter 16.
