titleOfInvention Preparation of cycloaliphatic aldehyde
abstract PURPOSE: To easily and profitably obtain a (optically active) cycloaliphatic aldehyde by cyclizing a (optically active) enol ester with an acidic cyclizing agent such as protic acid, an org. or inorg. acid or a Lewis acid. n CONSTITUTION: A compd. of formula I [wherein the wavy line indicates a C-O bond of cis or trans configuration; Y is acyl or P(O) (OR) 2 ; R is lower alkyl or aryl; and Z is a group of formula II (where R 5 is lower alkyl or H), etc.] is cyclized in the presence of an acidic cyclizing agent at 0-100°C to obtain the objective cycloaliphatic aldehyde of formula III (wherein R 0 -R 2 are each H or 1-6C alkyl; and X is a group of formula IV, etc.). Protic acid, an org. or inorg. acid or a Lewis acid may be used as the acidic cyclizing agent and sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, acetic acid, TiCl 4 or BF 3 is suitable for use as the agent. The cycloaliphatic aldehyde is useful as an intermediate of a compd. used in the field of flavor and fragrance industries. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO
