titleOfInvention Optically active substituted biphenylcarboxylic acids and production thereof
abstract NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is 1W20C alkyl or alkoxyalkyl which may be substituted with halogen; * represents asymmetric carbon atom.). n EXAMPLE: (+)-4'-(1-Propoxyethyl)-4-biphenylcarboxylic acid. n USE: Useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc., especially for liquid crystal compounds. n PREPARATION: The objective compound of formula I can be produced by condensing optically active alcohols of formula II (R' is lower alkyl) with a alkylation agent of formula R-X [X is a halogen or OSO 2 R''' (R''' is lower alkyl or (substituted)phenyl)] and hydrolyzing the resultant optically active ether derivative of formula III under alkaline condition. The starting compound of formula II is produced by reacting alcohols of formula IV with lower alkylcarboxylic acids and subjecting the resultant esters of formula V to asymmetric hydrolysis with an esterase capable of hydrolyzing either one of the optically active isomers of said esters. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio
