abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound having safe handling, containing no acetone peroxide, in a short time, in high purity economically and advantageously, by reacting neopentyl dimethylcarbinol with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of sulfuric acid. n CONSTITUTION: Neopentyl dimethylcarbinol (hereinafter abbreviated as DIBOH) or isobutylene containing ≥50wt.% neopentyl dimethylcarbinol is reacted with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of sulfuric acid to give 1,1,3,3- tetramethylbutylhydroperoxide. In the reaction, the amount of sulfuric acid used is 0.5W2mol based on 1mol DIB-OH, that of hydrogen peroxide is 1W3mol and concentration of sulfuric acid in the mixed solution of sulfuric acid-hydrogen peroxide is 38W45wt.%.
