titleOfInvention Novel cyclobutenedione derivative
abstract NEW MATERIAL:The cyclobutenedione derivative of formula I (R is CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , C 3 H 7 or C 4 H 9 ; X is Cl or OH). n EXAMPLE: The compound of formula II. n USE: A synthetic raw material for squarylium compound useful in the field of electrophotographic sensitive material, recording material for optical disk, solar cell and infrared-shielding filter. n PREPARATION: A compound of formula I wherein X is Cl is produced by reacting 3,4-dichloro-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione of formula III with a carbazole derivative of formula IV in a solvent (e.g., methylene chloride) at 0W40°C, as necessary in the presence of a catalyst (e.g., boron trifluoride ethyl ether complex). The compound can be converted to another compound of formula I wherein X is OH by heating and hydrolyzing the compound e.g., in water containing acetic acid. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio
