titleOfInvention | Production of di(hydroxyphenylthio)dioxaheptane |
abstract | PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound in high crystallization conversion and high yield, in the form of high purity crystal, by reacting mercaptophenol with a bis(haloethoxy)methane in a specific solvent in the presence of an alkali, adding water to the reaction product and adjusting the mixture to a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:Mercaptophenol is made to react with a bis(haloethoxy)methane in 40-2,000ml (based on 1mol of the mercaptophenol) of a water-soluble organic solvent (e.g., methanol, acetone or ethyl acetate) in the presence of an alkali (e.g., NaOH) at 0-150 deg.C under normal pressure for 0.1-12hr. The solution produced by the reaction is added with water, the temperature of the mixture is adjusted to the boiling point (Tb) of the water-soluble organic solvent or thereabove, usually between Tb and Tb+40 deg.C and the mixture is slowly cooled at a cooling rate of 5-20 deg.C/hr to obtain the objective compound [1,7-di(4- hydroxyphenylthio)-3,5-dioxaheptane] having large particle size and useful as a color-developer for heat-sensitive recording paper. |
