abstract PURPOSE: To form a hard metal carbonitride film excellent in strength and adhesive strength by specifying ratios among the flow rates of gaseous raw materials for film formation at the time of forming a film of the hard carbonitride of a specific metal on the surface of a super hard base material. n CONSTITUTION: At the time of forming a film of the hard carbonitride of group IVa metals such as Ti, e.g., a TiCN film on the surface of the base material of a cutting tool made of cemented carbide or cermet by a medium temp. chemical vapor deposition method, flow rate ratios among the flow rate (a) of TiCl 4 , the flow rate (b) of organic nitrogen compound CH 3 CN, and the flow rate (c) of H 2 gas as gaseous raw materials are regulated so that they satisfy inequalities I and II, by which a TiSN film free from the formation of free carbons by reaction and excellent in strength as well as in adhesive strength to the base material made of cemented carbide, cermet, etc., can be formed and the wear resistance and breaking resistance of the cutting tool made of cemented carbide or cermet can be improved. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio
