titleOfInvention Production of silicon carbide sheet
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain silicon carbide sheets which are thin and strong in high productivity, by putting a polycarbosilastyrene copolymer in a mold, compressing it into a sheet with heat under vacuum atmosphere and calcining the product in an inert gas. n CONSTITUTION: Polysilastyrene of formula I (n≥10) is heat-treated in an inert gas to introduce carbosilane bonds of formula II into the major chains of polysilastyrene whereby a polycarbosilastyrene copolymer of high moldability is produced. Then, the copolymer is placed in a mold, compressed with heat under a vacuum atmosphere to remove the liberated gas into a sheet. The resultant sheet is preoxidized, when needed, then calcined in an inert gas to give a silicon carbide sheet. The resultant sheet shows high conductivity and is suitable for an element of electric heaters. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio
