abstract |
The present invention provides a cutting tool made of a silicon nitride-based sintered body having high fracture resistance, with residual stresses on a rake face and a flank face within an appropriate range. SOLUTION: A silicon nitride-based sintered body containing a silicon nitride-based phase in a proportion of 50% by volume or more and a titanium nitride phase in a proportion of 10-30% by volume. A cutting tool which is used as the cutting edge 4 and whose residual stress applied to the titanium nitride phase is tensile stress and whose tensile stress applied to the titanium nitride phase on the rake face 2 is larger than the tensile stress applied to the titanium nitride phase on the flank face 3 1.
