titleOfInvention | Polymer-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display device |
abstract | <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal composition for reducing driving voltage so as to allow TFT (thin film transistor) drive in a polymer-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal display device capable of halftone display, and to provide a polymer-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal display composition and obtaining stable display by TFT drive. <P>SOLUTION: The polymer-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal composition comprises a specific polymerizable compound and a liquid crystalline compound represented by formula (II-a), wherein R<SP>11</SP>and R<SP>12</SP>each independently denote a 1-18C linear or branched alkyl group or a fluorine atom; X<SP>11</SP>-X<SP>17</SP>each independently denote a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, a CF<SB>3</SB>group or an OCF<SB>3</SB>group; L<SP>11</SP>-L<SP>14</SP>each independently denote a single bond, -O-, -S-, -CO-, -CH<SB>2</SB>O- or the like; and a<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>1</SP>and d<SP>1</SP>each independently denote 0 or an integer of 1, provided that a<SP>1</SP>+b<SP>1</SP>+c<SP>1</SP>+d<SP>1</SP>=1, 2 or 3, when a<SP>1</SP>is 0, d<SP>1</SP>is 0, and when a<SP>1</SP>is 1, c<SP>1</SP>is 0. The polymer-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition as a constructional element is driven at a low driving voltage, can obtain stable display by TFT drive, capable of halftone display which cannot be achieved by a display device using a single ferroelectric liquid crystal, and has excellent thermal and mechanical stability. The liquid crystal composition is also useful as a structure member of a plastic liquid crystal cell or the like. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
