abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an orientation agent which enables formation of a liquid crystal orientation film having a stable pretilt angle using a photo orientation method by blending a polystyrene derivative structural unit having a conjugate enone structure on its side chain and/or a polymer having a polymaleimide structural unit. SOLUTION: This agent contains a polymer having a structural unit of formula I and/or a structural unit of formula II. In the formulas, P1 and P2 are each a bivalent, preferably 6-20C organic group having an aromatic ring; Q1 and Q2 are each a monovalent, preferably 6-20C organic group having an aromatic ring; R1 and R2 are each a single bonding, a bivalent bonding group, an organic group preferably having an ether bonding and/or an ester bonding, a 6-24C organic group having an ether bonding and/or an ester bonding, or especially an organic group having an ether bonding and/or an ester bonding and a straight chain alkylene structure having at least 6 carbon atoms; and S1 is H or a monovalent organic group. This polymer can be prepared, for example, by carrying out radical polymerization of monomers of formulas III and/or IV in the presence of an initiator. |
