titleOfInvention Method for producing polyene ester and polyenoic acid
abstract Preparation of polyene esters or polyene acids of formulae (I') and (I'') is claimed comprises reacting a polyene-(di)-O,O-dialkylacetal of formula A-CH(OR4)2 (II') or (R4O)2CH-B-CH(OR4)2 (II'') with a vinyl-ketene acetal or corresponding analogue of formula (III), in the presence of a Lewis acid, followed (where R5 and R6 are both 1-6C alkyl or both tri(1-6C alkyl)silyl, or together form 1,2-ethylene or 1,3-trimethylene) by hydrolysis. The resulting compounds (IV') and (IV'') are treated with strong base and the R7 groups are optionally converted to the appropriate substituents; A = a monovalent conjugated polyene group optionally substituted by CH3; B = a bivalent conjugated polyene group optionally substituted by CH3; R1,R2 = H or CH3; R3 = H or 1-6C alkyl; R4,R5 = 1-6C alkyl; R6 = 1-6C alkyl or tri(1-6C alkyl)silyl; or R5 and R6 are both tri(1-6C alkyl)silyl, or together form 1,2-ethylene or 1,3-trimethylene; R7 = 1-6C alkyl, H, 2-hydroxyethyl or 3-hydroxy-n-propyl. The CH=CH-CR1=CR2-COOR3 groups are in each case attached to the end position(s) of the A or B conjugated chain. Compounds (IV') and (IV") are new where the CH(OR4)-CH2-CR1=CR2-COOR7 groups are each attached to the end positions of the A or B conjugated chain. Compounds (III) are new where R5, R6 = 1-6C alkyl; or R5+R6 = (CH2)s; s = 2 or 3; excepting the compounds 1,1-dimethoxy-1,3-butadiene; 1,1-diethoxy-3-methyl-1,3-butadiene; 2-allylidene-Ä1,3Üdioxolane; 2-(1-methyl-allylidene)-Ä1,3Üdioxolane and 2-(2-methyl-allylidene)-Ä1,3Üdioxolane.
