abstract PURPOSE: To reduce fuel consumption and an exhaust gas and at the same time improve a travel feeling by continuing the charging of a battery when the actuating quantity of a brake is not more than a predetermined value and bringing an engine into a stand-by state when the actuating quantity of a brake exceeds the predetermined value. CONSTITUTION: In the case where torque is determined unnecessary with respect to a demand torque from the actuating quantity of a brake 39 detected by a brake sensor 49 and when the actuating quantity of the brake 39 detected by the brake sensor 49 is root more than a predetermined value, an engine controller 42 continues the charging of a battery 3. When the actuating quantity of the brake 39 detected by the brake sensor 49 exceeds the predetermined value, it brings an engine 1 into a stand-by state. Therefore, fuel consumption and an exhaust gas can be reduced and at the same time a travel feeling can be improved.
