Glycoside derivs. of formula (I), their homopolymers and copolymers are new: where G-O- is a sugar residue free of protective gps; R is H or Me; m is 1 or 2; n is 1-4; p is at least 1; p is less than or equal to n. The polymers of (I) contain glycoside units of formula (II): and may also contain copolymer units e.g. olefinic units, pref. of formula where R2-R4 are H or Me; R5 is -COOR6, -CON(R7)2, -CN, -OH, -OCOR8, phenyl (opt. substd. by one or more Cl, lower alkyl, cyano, amino, OH or lower alkoxy gps.), pyridyl (opt. substd. by lower alkyl), 2-oxopyrrolyl (opt. substd. by alkyl) or carbazolyl; R6 is H, alkyl, hydroxy, cyclo, amino or dialkylaminoalkyl, glycidyl, tetrahydrofuryl, benzyl or -CH2CH2O)aCH2CH2OH (a = 1-10); R7 is H or lower alkyl (the two R7 may be the same or different); R8 is lower alkyl. In copolymers the proportion of (II) may be 1-99% molar and of (III) 99-1% molar. |
