A system and method for detecting an escalator in an ambient environment by a robot device are disclosed herein. According to at least one exemplary embodiment, the escalator can be determined based on the satisfaction of the escalator detection parameters. The escalator detection parameters further include the detection of two sidewalls separated by a distance equal to the width of the escalator, and the detection of a fall on the floor equal to what is observed between the stationary part of the escalator and the first step of movement.
