The present disclosure considers chiral dopants for liquid crystal materials. The chiral dopant may be a bioreachable compound, i.e., a compound produced by a microorganism by fermentation. Chiral dopants can also include bioreachable materials further modified by chemical synthesis steps. The chiral dopants considered herein include glycyrrhetinic acid (1), S-naringenin (2), shikimic acid (3), α-ferrandrene (4), valencene (5), malic acid (6), Biomolecules such as valencene (7), or nootkatone (8), and any stereoisomers or chemically modified derivatives thereof may be included. The present disclosure further demonstrates the optical properties of these compounds in liquid crystal materials. |
