abstract The present invention provides an adsorbent that can be used to improve water quality, has low ignitability, and can be safely handled, and a method for producing the same. The adsorbent material comprises a porous carbide, a binder, iron powder, and a compound of a metal selected from alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. The average particle size of the iron powder is 20 μm or more and 500 μm or less. Said compounds can be selected from chlorides, oxides, hydroxides, sulfates, nitrates. The content of porous carbide may be 20% by mass or more and 80% by mass or less, the content of binder may be 10% by mass or more and 50% by mass or less, and the content of iron powder may be 5% by mass or more and 35% by mass or less.
