abstract The white light source includes a light emitting layer including a phosphor and a light scattering material arranged in a binder, and a light source arranged so as to illuminate the light emitting layer with blue light. The white light source outputs white light including converted phosphor emission from a phosphor illuminated by blue light and unconverted scattered blue light scattered by a light scattering material. The unconverted scattered blue light has a spatial distribution that matches the spatial distribution of the converted phosphor emission. In some embodiments, the spatial distribution is approximately Lambert spatial distribution. The white light source can also include a phosphor wheel having a disk-shaped substrate on which a light emitting layer is arranged as a phosphor ring. The fluorophore ring can also include a light scattering material and a fluorophore placed in a binder that are uniform in composition around the annulus of the fluorophore ring.
