abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for recovering a rare earth element more easily and efficiently from a rare earth element-containing substance. In particular, it is an object of the present invention to provide a method for recovering rare earth elements more easily and efficiently from rare earth magnets incorporated in products. SOLUTION: A melting point lowering agent and an oxidizing agent and a borate of an alkali metal element or a borate of an alkali earth metal element are added to waste of a product or a semi-finished product containing a rare earth magnet and a steel material, and heated and melted. However, the rare earth oxide from the rare earth element-containing material, which comprises separating the rare earth element in the waste into two phases, a rare earth enriched phase concentrated in the borate and an Fe—C phase.
