A poly (arylpiperidinium) polymer containing a pendant cation group having an alkali-stable cation, piperidinium, introduced into a hard aromatic polymer backbone without an ether bond is provided. Hydroxide exchange membranes or hydroxide exchange ionomers formed from these polymers have excellent chemical stability, hydroxide conductivity, and water absorption rate compared to conventional hydroxide exchange membranes or ionomers. It exhibits reduced scent, good solubility in selected solvents, and improved mechanical properties in ambient dry conditions. Hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells containing poly (arylpiperidinium) polymers with pendant cationic groups exhibit improved performance and durability at relatively high temperatures.
