The teaching is to contact the amine salt catalyst with a dicarbonyl compound having an alkylene group between the carbonyl groups, formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde or formalin in an amount of about 2: 1 to about 3: 1 mol of formaldehyde. It is disclosed that it is added to a molar of a dicarbonyl compound to form a mixture and that the mixture is refluxed. This method forms a carbonyl substituted alkene. This method may be carried out in the absence of a solvent. This method can form methylene malonate, methylene dimalonate, methylene ketomalon amide, methylene diketone, methylene ketoester and the like. |
