A novel class of compounds is described herein. The disclosed novel compounds have one hydrophilic group and two identical hydrophilic ionic groups. The two hydrophilic groups of the disclosed compounds contain or terminate with a cationic or anionic charged group. Methods for synthesizing the disclosed novel compounds are also described. The novel compounds disclosed herein can be used as surfactants in articles, products, or compositions, or for some other purpose. Also disclosed herein are corrosion control compositions containing dicationic or dianionic compounds, and how to use them in corrosion control compositions to reduce surface corrosion in water systems. The disclosed methods or compositions have been found to be more effective than methods or compositions containing a single quaternary compound commonly used to mitigate corrosion of metal surfaces in water systems.
