Methods for stimulating retinal cells and treating vision loss |
abstract |
Protein-based subretinal implants offer a new approach to restore vision in patients who are blind due to conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The present invention relates to bacteriorhodopsin-based (BR-based) retinal implants that can be implanted in subretinal locations to replace degenerated photoreceptor cells. In one aspect, there is provided a method for treating a patient having visual loss caused by loss of retinal cells, the method comprising: (a) implanting a bacteriorhodopsin-based retinal implant in the patient's eye; and b) including activating the implant with a light source. |
