Disclosed herein is a polymer comprising recurring units of formula (I) or a copolymer comprising recurring units of formulas (I) and (II), wherein R 1 to R 12 , m, n, p, q, x and y are as defined herein. Polymers and copolymers have antibacterial effects and can be used in formulations intended for therapeutic or detergent use. In a preferred embodiment, cationic poly(alkylated imidazolium) chloride salts with accelerated charge in the backbone are synthesized from the mixture of hydrochloric acid, diamine, formaldehyde and glyoxal by the Debus-Radziszewski reaction. |
