Provided herein are methods and compositions for modulating the response of a microorganism to an antimicrobial agent. In one embodiment, the method comprises contacting the microorganism with an antimicrobial and a bicarbonate. In one embodiment, provided herein is a method of treating a microbial infection, comprising administering to a subject in need thereof an effective amount of (i) a bicarbonate and (ii) an antimicrobial agent.
