abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an element in which a liquid crystal medium exhibiting an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase, particularly a blue phase liquid crystal medium, is used for polarization control application, and a decrease in effective dielectric constant is suppressed in a high frequency region. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal composition containing an achiral component T and having a liquid crystal phase exhibiting optically isotropic properties, wherein the achiral component T is a compound represented by the formula (1) as a first component. A liquid crystal composition used for optical switching in which retardation is controlled by electric field-induced birefringence, which comprises at least one compound selected from the group and at least one compound as a second component.
