PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method using a copolymer for sealing a blood vessel puncture extending through a tissue to a blood vessel. A sealant (2) for sealing a puncture through tissue, the sealant comprising a first section (4) formed from a lyophilized hydrogel, the first section being physiological within the puncture. Swells when exposed to a fluid, the first section comprises a hydrogel comprising chitosan bound to at least one polymer, and when exposed to an aqueous physiological fluid, the hydrogel swells to puncture tissue.
