PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material for thermal barrier coating, which can be suitably used for forming a thermal barrier coating excellent in low thermal conductivity and structural stability. A compound X, which is a cation-deficient defective perovskite-type composite oxide, is used, and the unit cell of the compound X is composed of six oxygen atoms, and two unit lattices share one oxygen atom. In the compound X, the central axes of the two adjacent octahedrons each have a structure in which the tetrahedrons are arranged side by side, and the central axes of the two octahedrons are inclined with respect to each other. Two adjacent octahedrons that belong to each other form a periodic structure by arranging a plurality of octahedrons having different inclinations alternately, and the compound X has the periodic structure in the crystal structure thereof.
