A method for selecting or identifying a patient for treatment with a factor D inhibitor is provided. A method for predicting the rate of progression of a degenerative disease in a patient with a degenerative disease, comprising: (a) determining the presence of at least one degenerative disease-related polymorphism in a biological sample obtained from the patient; Providing an isolated nucleic acid sample, and (ii) determining the presence of at least one degenerative disease-associated polymorphism by detecting the genotype of the nucleic acid sample, wherein the polymorphism is a CFI allele, a CFH allele, a C2 allele. (B) at least one risk allele selected from the group consisting of a CFI allele, a CFH allele, a C2 allele, a CFB allele, or a C3 allele; Identifying the patient as likely to have an increased rate of progression of the degenerative disease when is present.
