A recombinant microbial cell engineered to produce a fatty acid derivative having a linear chain containing an odd number of carbon atoms by a fatty acid biosynthetic pathway, and an odd-chain fatty acid derivative is produced using the recombinant microbial cell. Provided are a method and a composition comprising an odd-chain fatty acid derivative produced by the method. A polypeptide having an effective enzymatic activity for producing an increased amount of propionyl-CoA, a polypeptide having a β-ketoacyl-ACP synthase activity utilizing propionyl-CoA as a substrate, and a fatty acid derivative A polypeptide having enzymatic activity, and a recombinant microbial cell having a polynucleotide encoding the same, respectively, and when cultured under conditions effective for expressing the polynucleotide, a fatty acid derivative including an odd-chain fatty acid derivative A recombinant microbial cell that produces a composition, wherein at least 10% of the fatty acid derivatives in the fatty acid derivative composition are odd-chain fatty acid derivatives.
