abstract | An object of the present invention is to provide a method for producing a low molecular weight polyphenylene ether resin which is economically excellent while improving the recovery of the low molecular weight polyphenylene ether resin. A polyphenylene ether poor solvent is added to a solution in which a polyphenylene ether resin having a molecular weight distribution is dissolved in a good solvent of the polyphenylene ether, and a part (a) of the polyphenylene ether resin is precipitated to form a slurry liquid. A step of obtaining a mixed solution by filtering a part (a) of the polyphenylene ether resin from the slurry liquid, and adding a water to the mixed solution to form a good solvent phase containing a good solvent of polyphenylene ether; Liquid-liquid separation into a poor solvent of polyphenylene ether and a mixed phase containing water, and after performing liquid-liquid separation, concentrating the good solvent phase to obtain a residual solution; and Mixing and precipitating a part (b) of the polyphenylene ether resin.
