The present disclosure relates to membrane assemblies, electrode assemblies and membrane electrode assemblies and electrochemical cells and liquid flow batteries made therefrom. The present disclosure further provides a membrane assembly, an electrode assembly, and a method of manufacturing the membrane electrode assembly. The membrane assembly comprises an ion permeable membrane and at least one transport protection layer. The electrode assembly comprises a porous electrode and a transport protection layer. The membrane electrode assembly comprises an ion permeable membrane, at least one transport protection layer, and at least one porous electrode. The transport protective layer comprises at least a portion of at least one of a non-conductive woven and non-woven substrate comprising fibers and at least one of the non-conductive woven and non-woven substrates.
